Maria, Pablo, and Dy (in the pictures with other beneficiaries) are some of the 350 lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex (LGBTI) people who have taken part in our pioneering small business programme, skills training or social inclusion activities in the countries where we operate (Cambodia, Brazil and the UK) in 2016.
Several countries in the world still discriminate and persecute LGBTI people. In many more, LGBTI people are prevented from accessing jobs, healthcare and education leaving LGBTI people homeless, sick, and extremely isolated.
MRI’s programmes are designed to improve the livelihoods of LGBTI people, to create new role models in the community and to change people’s minds and hearts.
Maria, Pablo, and Dy are respectively now working as a plumber, caterer, and market stall owner. They are positive and important parts of their families and wider communities.
2016 has been another difficult year for the LGBTI community, with attacks and murders of LGBTI people in every corner of the world, just because of who we are and who we love.
However, in this holiday season we want to celebrate the dozens of people like Maria, Pablo, and Dy who are making the world a more equal place and doing so with dignity, love and hard work.
We also want to thank every single one of you: without your solidarity, we could not do carry out our work. Together we are stronger and we will make the world a more equal place for everyone.
